Adcote School for Girls

Independent day and boarding school for girls aged 4-18

Activities

Judo

Judo started as an activity 5 years ago and has been very popular with Junior and Seniors alike. Many have achieved their first belt and a few are well on their way to reaching black belt status. This has also led to some girls joining a local Judo club run by our coach and competing in local competitions.

Horse Riding

This is very popular with a wide range of pupils, from both Juniors and Seniors, going every Friday to the local stables. There is also an annual fun ride through the grounds and around the local area.

Dance

Ballet is a timetabled activity for Junior girls. We also have Greek dancing as a prep time activity for Senior girls. The Centenary show featured several well choreographed and expertly danced numbers, alongside sung musical pieces.

Gymnastics and Trampolining

Trampolining is a very popular part of both PE lessons and the activities programme. Gymnastics at both junior and senior level is one of Adcote's success stories - see the sports and news pages for more details.

Circus Skills

Circus Skills has proved an unusual and popular addition to the activities programme. Girls have an opportunity to try their hand at anything from juggling to clowning, or hula hoop to unicycle riding .

Other Sports

Senior girls have the opportunity to row once or twice a week, and the school has just begun to compete in this area. We have an excellent visiting tennis coach who takes both Junior and Senior girls throughout the year. Golf was introduced recently and has a small dedicated group that now visit a local golf course weekly. Archery is also available in the summer term.

Design Technology

Beyond the curriculum lessons, food club gives senior girls the opportunity to increase and improve their practical cooking skills and introduces the junior girls to basic food preparation and kitchen skills. Emphasis is put on enjoyment in the preparation as well as the eating of the final product. Textiles club is a time for girls to take on a practical project to produce a finished textiles piece and provides valuable practical experience to improve their skills.

Gardening

This was introduced last year with Juniors and Seniors and led from basic cultivation to show gardens at the Shrewsbury Flower Show. The theme of the first garden tried to mirror the progress of a pupil through their education at Adcote from the seedlings in the Junior School to the well established shrubs and trees in the Sixth Form. TV's 'Flying Gardener' Chris Beardshaw was one of the judges and, when told of plans to do another show garden at the Malvern Show, he offered to help. This time the theme was Victorian kitchen gardens, relevant to Adcote due to its history and the large walled garden that used to exist here. Adcote's cottage garden went on to win a gold medal, and Best in Show. For more details, click here.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Senior girls are encouraged to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. They are challenged to commit to developing a skill and a physical activity, to completing some voluntary service, and of course participating in the infamous expeditions! Many of the girls enjoy their experiences so much at Bronze level that they choose to go on and complete the Silver and Gold awards.
