LOCAL HISTORIANS VISIT ADCOTE SCHOOL

On Thursday 13th March a full coach of history enthusiasts from south Shropshire and north Herefordshire visited Adcote School . They have been attending an annual series of twenty lectures on Tuesday mornings at Ludlow Assembly Rooms. This year's course on The Great Houses of Shropshire and Adjoining Counties has been given by local historian and author Dr David Lloyd, with assistance from Joanne Lindsay (pictured left).

David Lloyd commented, "We are most grateful for the warm invitation from the Headmaster, Ryan Jervis, and his colleagues. Adcote is one of the architectural gems of Shropshire , and is widely considered to be one of the finest works by the Victorian architect Norman Shaw. Built for Rebecca Darby, the house and its estate are an eloquent testimony of the success of Shropshire 's iron-making industries in the 18th and 19th centuries, in which the Darby family played a leading role.

"We have seen the spectacular Great Hall and other rooms, sympathetically maintained by the Adcote School Trust, and toured the magnificent grounds. But our interest is not only architectural - it has been a special privilege to see something of the work of this highly regarded school and to meet its staff and students."
