ADCOTE GIRLS' SPELLBINDING RESULT FOR MENCAP
Pupils from Adcote School for Girls put in a spellbinding performance to raise more than £417 for Mencap's 2006-7 sponsored spelling challenge. A range of spelling tests to suit all ages meant that the whole school could get involved. Adcote's Head Debbie Hammond, told us "The girls in Year 8 started the ball rolling with an inspiring presentation at one of our morning assemblies which motivated the rest of the school to take part. We were delighted with the results - not just by the accuracy of the girls' spelling, which was very good, but also by their wholehearted approach to getting as many sponsors as they could to help raise money for those less fortunate than themselves."
Now in its 14 th year Mencap's Spellathon is a fundraising event for schools which aims to promote and improve children's spelling, teach them about learning disabilities and raise funds for thousands of disadvantaged children and adults throughout the UK . The event is supported by James and Oliver Phelps (who play the Weasley twins in the Harry Potter films) and the Oxford University Press.
During 2006-7 Mencap is celebrating 60 years of helping people with a learning disability, their families and carers. James and Oliver Phelps pledged to make this year its most magical. "Spellathon is a great way for pupils to improve their spelling and mots of all it's fun learning new words!"
