The Shropshire Teenage Book Awards

Posted: 6th January 2017

The Shropshire Teenage Book Awards once again enlisted the support of Adcote pupils to judge young adult titles. Sara Pritchard, Schools Library Manager, brought with her eight titles for our Year 9 English students to look at, including works by Annabel Pitcher, Louise Garnell, Ali Benjamin and Ruta Sepetys.

Themes covered were quite challenging and contemporary, including agoraphobia, friendship, abusive relationships and drugs.

Sara said the awards were an ideal means of encouraging interest in reading.

She added: “Where children are in primary school they are all reading but in secondary school there is a huge drop off. We wanted to present them with not just well known writers but also with thought provoking material, such as family situations and modern issues of our society which they can identify with and explore in a safe way.”

Our girls have been invited to attend the awards ceremony at Shirehall on March 21st, 2017, when they will have the opportunity to listen to the writers read from and discuss their books.
