The recent National Curriculum Review KS2 Final Report has offered a valuable snapshot of where primary education in the UK is heading. For us at Adcote Juniors, it is both affirming and encouraging to see national recommendations reflecting the teaching philosophies we already prioritise in our classrooms.
Rather than prompting change, the report reinforces the strength of an approach we have long believed in: depth over speed, understanding over memorisation, and relevance over routine.
English: Context Over Isolation
One of the key recommendations is to avoid teaching grammar in isolation. Instead, grammar should be embedded within reading and writing so that pupils understand how language works in meaningful contexts.
This mirrors the Adcote Junior philosophy. Our pupils learn grammar through storytelling, creative writing, and guided reading, allowing them to see language as a tool for expression rather than a set of rules to memorise. The result is not only technical accuracy, but confident, purposeful communication.
Maths: Mastery Before Momentum
The report highlights the importance of not rushing through mathematical concepts, encouraging schools to prioritise understanding and fluency.
At Adcote Juniors, mastery has always been central to our maths teaching. We give pupils the time and support needed to fully grasp concepts before moving forward. This builds confidence, reduces anxiety around maths, and ensures knowledge is secure and transferable.
Science: Depth, Relevance and Real-World Links
The review also emphasises consistency in science teaching and connecting learning to real-world issues such as climate change and the work of modern scientists.
Our science curriculum is designed to nurture curiosity about the world. Pupils explore scientific ideas through investigation, discussion, and real-life application. By linking learning to global challenges and everyday scientific roles, we help pupils see science as something active, relevant, and full of possibility.
A Positive Alignment
For our teachers, parents, and pupils, this alignment between national recommendations and our existing practice is reassuring. It shows that an education built on understanding, curiosity, and meaningful learning experiences truly prepares children for the future.
At Adcote Juniors, we remain committed to providing a learning environment where children are encouraged to think deeply, ask questions, and develop skills that extend beyond the classroom.
Because great education isn’t about rushing ahead — it’s about building strong foundations that last.
