Always mindful of extolling the British values and traditions so intrinsic to the ethos of the school, Adcote School is keen to encourage pupils to take part in the typically British ‘Summer Bake-Off’ challenges in June.
This year the theme is very British indeed and is to bake ‘A Cake Fit For The Queen’. The Bake-Offs have become a regular feature of the Summer Term’s calendar over the last couple of years and an increasing number of girls of all ages have taken part.
Last year the title was ‘Alice In Wonderland’ and one could see the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party as the pivotal scene focussed on by most who entered.
The Junior School competition was won by Maddie Stone for her exceptionally moist, and remarkably balanced top hat and teapot cake.
The Senior School entries were from both Day and Boarding girls and were set up in style in a mini ‘Bake-Off Marquee’, complete with pastel bunting to complement the summer sunshine of Sports Day. Whilst the Junior and Senior girls raced, long jumped and passed their batons on the athletics field, the judges had the arduous task of critiquing the Senior School entries. Judging criteria were appearance and taste, and a hard and lengthy job it was too! Diets were abandoned, glasses of water sipped and professional taste buds put to the test.
Eventually after some deliberation first prize went to Mona Chang for her amazing cream and chocolate layer cake, which was carefully iced and included Chinese characters which looked surprisingly at home within the theme of ‘Alice In Wonderland’! Second prize was awarded to Scarlett Ford for her fabulous multi-piece creation of the Mad Hatter’s hat and cups and saucers. Third prize went to Dee Edwards for her superb culinary creation of a tea pot, which tasted incredibly moist and delicious.
The Adcote School staff also had the opportunity to don their aprons and put their creative cooking hats on to compete for the third Bake-Off title.
One of the judges, Food Technology teacher Rona Roberts commented ‘ Adcote staff are multi-skilled and highly talented as this competition shows.’ First prize went to Mrs Meg Cooke, Performing Arts and Child Development teacher for her amazing ‘After The Tea Party’ cake which featured delicately made ‘porcelain’ cups and saucers, a ‘linen’ tablecloth, the Mad Hatter’s hat and the dormouse disappearing under the table. It was a truly professional and delightful cake.
Adcote School managed to raise almost £100 from the three Bake-Off competitions last year. These funds went to Shrewsbury Ark, a local charity for the homeless in the county town.
The School is hoping to raise even more this year and is encouraging all staff and pupils to enter their ‘Royal themed cakes’ for the competition. The judges are looking forward to tasting crowns, corgis and countless Queen’s faces in honour of her 90th birthday celebrations.
