Plantation to Palate – Adcote Welcomes Award-Winning Chocolatier

Posted: 9th May 2016

This week Adcote pupils in Years 7 and 8 were thrilled to experience the sights, sounds (yes, sounds) and flavours of award-winning Chocolatier David Greenwood-Haigh from ‘Coeur de Xocolat’. David came to the School in full chef’s whites to deliver an ‘Adventure in Chocolate’ experience.

He gave a fascinating and mouth-watering presentation illustrating the history of chocolate from ‘bean to bar, including Montezuma’s role and how the Fairtrade Association came into being.

Having understood the need for tempering chocolate prior to use and looking at the critical temperatures involved in chocolate prodution, pupils then made and decorated lollipops, designed a chocolate factory and played chocolate bingo.

They were able to sample different types of chocolate, learning about the percentages of cocoa solids in each, the use of added ingredients and the critical ‘snap’ sound of dark chocolate.

Maddie Croall from Year 7 commented ‘We have had a really interesting day and came away with a much better understanding of the science and history of chocolate and also our own delicious treat.’
