Remembrance Day this year was an astonishingly moving event with a whole school service led by our school chaplain Lucinda Burns.
We enjoyed beautiful singing from Years 5 and 6 and the Senior School choirs. The younger girls performed a lovely version of Dona Nobis Pacem in the round, whilst the Youth and Senior Choir sang two songs composed by Adcote Latin teacher Caroline Besterman based on World War One poetry.
Sally Roberts, Head of Humanities, gave some readings of intimate letters home from the trenches, assisted by Rhiannon Williams and Eleni Higgins. Headteacher Diane Browne read the heartbreaking ‘My Three Kids’ by Robert Smylie which really impressed upon our younger girls the domestic tragedy of war. (CORR)
Hanna Chadwick read a Mary Webb poem The Lad Out There and our two head girls Katie Richards and Florence Galliers laid a wreath of poppies.
We are so lucky to have a former professional trumpet player on our staff – Chris Bunn gave a poignant rendition of The Last Post and the Reveille from the balcony above our Great Hall.
Reverend Burns said: “There was a wonderful atmosphere in the Great Hall. The girls were clearly affected by the stories and the emotive music and you could have heard a pin drop during the two minute’s silence.”
