ADCOTE School is gaining a reputation for first class choral singing – claiming top prizes at the Oswestry Music Festival and now the Minsterley Eisteddfod, where its Glee Club and Adcote Pops choirs clinched first places at the weekend.
Enthusiastic input and leadership from former professional trumpet player and our new Music Coordinator Chris Bunn is clearly paying off, as the Glee Club won the KS3 and under section at the 55th Minsterley Eisteddfod on Saturday. Adcote Pops won the Singing Class with what judges described as a ‘flawless performance’.
Mr Bunn said: “The standard was high. Our girls gave fantastic performances, probably even better than Oswestry, which pleased me enormously. It was nail-biting waiting for the judging but it was another win for Adcote and lots more silverware to find room for in our trophy cabinet.”
The successes came after our girls’ winning performances at the Oswestry Music Festival last month (March), where Adcote choirs claimed all three top places in the 15 and Under section: Adcote Glee Club came in first place with an ‘outstanding’ from the judges, followed by Adcote Youth Choir and then Adcote Pops, in third place.
Around 250 competitors of all ages took part in 30 classes at the Minsterley Eisteddfod, in instrumental solos and groups, vocal solos and choral singing in all genres, judged by professional adjudicators. Forty-seven girls from Adcote took part.
We also claimed first and second places in the Musical Theatre category, thanks to outstanding performances by Freya Moxley (1st) and Hattie Candler (2nd).
Mr Bunn praised Hattie for her very brave performance later in the evening, taking on grown-ups, including an opera singer (!) and a sixty-year-old man in the individual vocal performance category.
He said: “When Hattie found out the candidate just before her had just gained a vocal scholarship to study singing in Cardiff, I watched as her face drained of all colour. but she turned to me and said, ‘I might have an advantage as my voice is so different’. What resilience. She then gave an outstanding performance and, although she didn’t place, it was an excellent experience for her.”
Adcote Youth choir also gave an excellent performance on the day, despite only having nine members of the choir there! Mr Bunn added that particular mention must go to Amelia Livermore and Katie Richards as the two of them valiantly held the alto part together.
