Pupils at Adcote School are celebrating winning a haul of trophies and top three podium places at the Oswestry Youth Music Festival 2019.

The school’s Chamber Choir won the best Under 16 Youth Choir category for the fourth year and also came second in the Under 21 Youth Choir category, despite most of its singers being aged 12 or under.

There were a string of other first places for the independent all-girls school with students Freya Owen and Phoebe Dimmack winning the Under 15 Vocal Duet class and Hattie Candler and Hope Mitchell each winning classes in Musical Theatre with distinction.

Adcote School also won a string of other podium placings. Students achieved eight individual or group second places including its PlusOnes singing group which was runner-up in the Under 21 Vocal Harmony Class, despite being made up of largely under 12 and under 14 students. And the school attained a line-up of eight solo and group third placings too.

The four-day annual festival, organised by Oswestry Town Council, attracts top youth choirs, soloists and musicians from across Shropshire and further afield.

“The festival, as always, was an incredible way for students to experience a performance setting in a supportive environment, but with a little frisson of competitive excitement,” said Adcote Director of Music Chris Bunn.

“It was yet another wonderful year for Adcote where our singers and musicians performed exceptionally well. They showed great confidence and resilience in abundance, especially when competing in higher age groups against some outstanding performers.”

Headmistress Diane Browne said: “What a stunning performance from our girls! It takes real determination and organisation to practice well so that you can achieve your very best standard, and then great courage to hold your nerve and perform in front of an audience and your competitors. Our girls have fantastic character and we are extremely proud of them”.

Adcote’s Chamber Choir had won the Under 16 Best Youth Choir title in 2015, 2016 and 2017, but missed out on competing in 2018 due to The Beast From The East when snow prevented the choir from reaching the festival venue.
