Adcote scientists take part in National Schools Analysts Competition

Posted: 26th May 2021

We are so proud that our young Adcote scientists were selected to take part in the National Schools Analysts Competition which is open to Year 12 chemistry students

As you know, the sciences are very strong subjects at Adcote and we entered two teams for the all-day event which took place on Wednesday. The girls involved were Rhiannon W, Margaret S, Marta N, Anna P, Andrea L and Kayleigh G.

The girls first needed to identify the organic dyes present in a chemical  mixture using thin layer chromatography. This was followed by colourful flame tests to determine the metal ion as well as qualitative analysis to evaluate the specific sodium salt.  The girls then completed a report and some challenging additional questions. It was a complex day requiring great teamwork, analysis and evaluation skills.
