Parliament Loan Box

Posted: 4th October 2016

THE origins of Parliament go back to the 13th Century and it can seem a bit of a mysterious process to the uninitiated.

But by taking advantage of a House of Commons scheme to lend out the trappings of office – wigs and maces – we have been able to bring the process of law-making to life here at Adcote.

Nicky Candler, Head of Junior School, entered a lottery last term for a temporary loan of a Parliament Loan Box to share with the girls as part of their Citizenship curriculum.

The box contains:

  • Cloth Backdrop of the House of Lords and the House of Commons
  • The Speaker of the House of Commons’ official black robe
  • Clerk’s wig
  • Bill
  • Despatch Box
  • Mace
  • Division bell

The girls study Parliament, The Queen and the Law in the new Citizenship scheme.

“The Loan Box is a wonderful opportunity to handle a range of Parliamentary objects which are so important to our democracy,” said Mrs Candler.

“The girls are very excited to wear the wig and gown of the Speaker of the House of Commons and to use that famous gavel to call order to school proceedings!’

Mrs Candler also intends the box should play a role in the launch of a brand new debating club.
